Such is the charisma of India’s sports icon, who has dominated the world of tennis for over two decades.
Born to parents who were themselves acclaimed sportspersons, a passion for sports ran in Leander’s blood.
Leander joined the Britannia Tennis Academy in Chennai in 1985 where he was coached by Dave O’Meara. His claim to fame came soon after, when he won the 1990 Wimbledon Junior Title and was ranked the No. 1 junior player in the world. In 1996 Leander made India proud by winning the singles bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympics. This was India’s first medal since 1980 and also the country’s first individual medal since 1952, a great achievement from the rising star.
During the next decade Leander carved a niche in the world of tennis as one of the leading doubles player with 36 ATP titles, including seven Grand Slams and a World No.1 ranking. He has also been a key member of the Davis Cup squad since 1990 and the Playing Captain since 2004. Carrying the Indian National Flag during the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics was one of the greatest honors showered upon him by the Indian government.
The other followed the next year itself. He received one of India’s most respected recognition, the Padma Shri, which is awarded to citizens in recognition of their distinguished service to the nation. A prized treasure for India, Leander continues to lead and inspire players and fans across the world with his high quality of tennis, commitment, perseverance and fortitude and resolve.
